B-25 MITCHELL BOMBER |
My father, Second Lieutenant E. R. Cregar, served in one of these bombers during the Second World War. As the Navigator-Bombardier, he occupied this glass nose "front office". |
Having recently had the opportunity to climb around in this plane, I was surprised to find the interior much smaller and horribly more claustrophobic than I was led to believe by watching Van Johnson in "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" (countless times as a kid). |
How anyone ever managed to bail out, I do not know. In order to reach the navigation station in the nose, you must crawl through a very long narrow tube which runs underneath the cockpit. |
