In August of 2008, the Russians launched a massive invasion of the Republic of Georgia over a land dispute involving South Ossetia, a region which the world clearly recognizes as part of Georgia.
Prior to the invasion, the Russians distributed passports to the villagers of Ossetia. They then used the pretense that they were simply protecting their "citizens" as their justification for all out war.
This "strategy" was also used with great success by Aldolph Hitler.
The invasion began with a massive bombing campaign on the city of Gori. A full-scale land invasion followed resulting in widespread looting and burning. Civilians were gunned down on their porches.
